As the saying goes 'Variety is the spice of life' and that 'spice' will bring more birds into your yard.
This time of year, there are four types of feed that people tend to put out: wild bird seed, nyger thistle seed, black oil sunflower seed and suet. Each type of feed will attract different birds. There are specific feeders for each feed type. By putting out feeders for types of feed that you don't already offer, you will attract more species to your yard. If you don't have enough space for all 4 types of feed, there are combination feeders that allow you to offer several different types in the space of one feeder. Cover can also be important. Some bird species will visit a feeder that is completely out in the open. Others need vegetation, shrubs and trees close to a feeder to be attracted to it. For instance, we really chopped back the blackberry canes near one of our feeders this year and we are not seeing any spotted towhees at that feeder.
Selective feeders and squirrel resistant feeders can also make a difference. I notice that when our 'gang' of Steller's Jays move in, the Nuthatches, Chickadees and Juncos scatter. Similarly, when one of our Fox Squirrels move in, the smaller birds keep their distance. By following these tips, you should be able to increase the number of birds and the number of species that you attract to your yard.
Happy Feeding!
